Trekking Tips
Himalaya Treking Tips
- When on a long trek, the backpack that you use for the trek should be sturdy. It plays an important role in organizing and carrying important items, hence make sure that the backpack is at least 50-60 liter with good hip and shoulder support. Quick access pockets are an added advantage.
- In high altitude treks you will be walking/climbing for long hours. Strong and sturdy trekking shoes with good grip and ankle support are essential for Himalayan treks. Always check the wear and tear of shoes before embarking on a long trek. Buying a new pair might be a good investment for a Himalayan trek.
- Wear full sleeves, collared T-shirts, preferably synthetic. This helps block the UV rays and avoids your skin getting sunburnt. Dry-fit t-shirts quickly dry the sweat. In case of rains, the shirt dries quickly, helping you stay dry.
- When on a Himalayan trek, it is important to layer up. Layered clothing helps tackle the cold. In the possibility of temperature change, you can put on or take off layers as required.
- When buying/carrying sweaters and fleece jackets, make sure that you carry the light, easy to roll ones instead of bulky and puffed ones.
- A padded outer jacket that can keep the wind and cold out is essential when on a Himalayan trek. Take one with a hood for better protection.
- Carry your own cutlery and keep it clean. Carry a small tiffin box, a mug and a spoon. After you consume your food, clean the cutlery with water and pack it well to avoid contamination. The last thing you want is to catch a stomach flu on a trek.
- Keep at least 2 liters of water handy. The early mornings or late evenings are usually cold in the mountains. Try and have a thermos with warm water to keep yourself hydrated in the evenings or early mornings.
- Important accessories to carry when on a Himalayan trek are sunglasses, sun cap, synthetic hand gloves, woollen cap, socks, headlamp and trekking pole.
- Depending on the terrain you might need a coil of rope, ice axes, crampons, gaiters, etc. If you are a beginner it is important that you take help from professional guides.
